Joel Gurin, senior advisor at the GovLab and director of our Open Data 500 project, is the author of Open Data Now, which has just been published by McGraw-Hill. The book, which is the first comprehensive, general-audience guide to Open Data, has gotten strong reviews from data scientists and business experts alike. Like the Open Data 500, the book is largely focused on the private-sector application of Open Data, but it includes an analysis of privacy, transparency, regulatory, and other policy issues as well.
The book’s publication is the occasion for two public events next week, one in Washington, DC and one in New York.
On Wednesday, January 22, in Washington, the Data Transparency Coalition and Fedscoop will host a launch event. In addition to a short talk from Joel on the major themes of his book, Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO), a proponent of the DATA Act, will talk about the importance of government Open Data in America today. LINK
The next evening, Thursday, January 23, the Open Data Meetup – New York will hold an author’s event in lower Manhattan. In this more extended presentation, Joel will describe how Open Data relates to Big Data, its business potential, and its importance in creating a more transparent society. Books will be available for purchase at both events. LINK
